The Efficiency of Interactive E-book in Learning Functional Garments Design

Abstract

This paper aims to measure the efficiency of an interactive e-book as a tool to learn Functional Garments Design, and to identify learner’s attitudes towards using such an e-book as a modern interactive e-learning tool that would contribute to enrichment of the scientific specialization of (fashion design), thus achieving Saudi Arabia's vision which calls for activating e-learning as an important medium for achieving goals of education. The research’s tools consisted of pre- and post- achievement tests and a skill performance scale to measure the knowledge and skills of female learners in both control and experimental groups. It also utilized an attitude scale to measure learners’ opinions on learning Functional Garments Design through the proposed e-book. The reliability and validity of these tools were verified by a group of field experts and specialists. In order to verify the research’s hypothesis, a quasi-experimental method was applied, where the research sample was randomly divided into two control and experimental groups to measure the impact of the independent variable (the use of an interactive e-book) on the dependent variable (level of learners’ learning achievement of Functional Garments Design).The research’s findings have demonstrated the effectiveness of the scientific content in achieving the defined and planned objectives. They have also proved that learning though an e-book is more efficient and easier than traditional methods, since it achieves a curricular efficiency in terms of content’s compatibility with  defined objectives, level of both learners and educational activities offered to them; flexibility of use, provision of enrichment activities, and technical efficiency, including efficiency of performance and use in terms of design, display, sound, optimal use of colors, fonts, graphics, and the extent to which all of these relate to the objectives, content, and duration of application. These attributes make the proposed e-book an appropriate and more productive medium that uses less resources in a short period of time.This was verified by measuring the differences in the application of pre- and post- achievement tests and skill performance tests on the control and experimental groups, which were in favor of the posttests. The findings have also shown positive attitudes and opinions of learners towards learning of Functional Garments Design through the proposed e-book.
