Death Discourse in Ali Bnu Hazm al-Andalussi’s Poetry
Abstract
This survey deals with ‘Death’ in the verses of Ali Bnu Hazm al-Andalussi (d. 456 H.). Following the analytically descriptive method, it shows how the poet employs Death while tackling different objectives. Thus, all verses containing the word Death have been computed and analyzed showing that it occupies a wide space in his poetry.
One may wonder .
As a child, the poet enjoyed a religious, fiqhi rather than literary artistic atmosphere. Hence, while he was very young, he learnt Holy Qur’an by heart and learnt religious sciences, this attracted his attention to the fact that this is inevitably perishable… Death is so close to Man that it may cut in any moment. It does not differentiate between old or young, ill or healthy, rich or poor.
Besides, verses cover all his lifetime, i.e., they were not confined to a limited period of his life. His Diwan, his Letters, and his book The Pigion Ring (written in the prime of his youth) contain all his verses.
In short, it is the definite visitor Man has to receive without previously demanded permission.
