Abstract

Addiction to pornography consumption is one of the major challenges and problems that threaten mental health in particular, and family and community health in general. Statistics from Pornhub.com, 2017 show that three thousand people around the world watch pornographic scenes per second. This type of addiction is not caused solely by the satisfaction of sexual desires, but rather by psychological and social factors. Despite the spread of this type of addiction in our Arab world, there are very few Arab researches and studies that search for the causes of addiction to pornography consumption and the risk factors that lead to this addiction. Understanding the causes helps prevent this addiction, especially from its beginnings, and specifically in examining and studying the childhood stage and its experiences, because of the importance and danger of this stage in shaping the psychological structure of a person. A person's exposure at this stage to risks and harmful experiences may make him vulnerable to many psychological problems in adulthood, including addiction. Therefore, this study seeks to fill the knowledge gap in Arab scientific research by examining one of the causes that lead to addiction to pornography consumption, including studying the association between harmful childhood experiences and their relationship to addiction to pornography consumption among a large, nationally representative sample in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which represented 799 people. Male and female participants. The results of the study showed that there is a positive correlation between harmful childhood experiences and addiction to pornography consumption. The most harmful childhood experiences to which those addicted to consuming pornography are exposed are psychological instability of the parents or one of them, and exposure to physical, verbal, and emotional violence by caregivers, especially parents.
