International Students in Saudi Higher Education Institutions
(A comparative study between 1971 and 2021)
Abstract
This study aimed to discover facts about international students in higher education institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1971 and 2021 to compare the most significant similarities and differences in the reality of international students in Saudi Arabia over half a century. Most notable about the results is that the number of international students has doubled several times. The total number of international students in higher education institutions was 1,404 in 1971, while the total in 2021 was about 65,000. The study also found that most international students in Saudi higher education institutions, since the formation of higher education in 1949, have been on internal and external scholarships funded by the Saudi government through government universities. The Islamic University in Medina was the most prominent host of non-Saudi students in 2021. The University of Riyadh (currently King Saud University) was the largest destination for international students in 1971. The number of female international students in government higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia has increased from 177 in 1971 to over 17,000 in 2021. This increase coincided with the percentage of non-Saudi female students representing the total number of non-local students. The percentage of non-citizen female students was 13% of the total number of international students in 1971 and increased to over 37% in 2021. Arab international students constituted the majority of international students in higher education institutions, in 1971 and 2021. The largest group of international students in 1971 was from Jordan, while students from the Republic of Yemen were the largest group of international students in Saudi Arabia in 2021. Students from Indonesia formed the largest group of non-Arab international students in 1971 and 2021, and higher education institutions in 2021 witnessed the presence of students from countries outside of Asia and Africa, like the United States, Canada, and Brazil.
