International Students in Higher Education Institutions in the Arab World
Abstract
Seeking education outside the homeland is considered a progressive practice evidenced in most modern civilizations, whether Eastern or Western. The emergence of universities, whether in the Arab or Western world, has contributed to making international student mobility a feature of higher education institutions that have increased cultural and ethnic diversity compared to public educational institutions. The current study aims to discover the reality of international student mobility in universities in Arab countries, to know the numbers of international students hosted by higher education institutions in some Arab countries, and to know the students studying abroad from those Arab countries. The study also aimed to discover the challenges international students face in higher education institutions in Arab countries. The study discovered that educational institutions in the countries of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and the Arab Republic of Egypt are the largest in terms of hosting international students in their educational institutions. The study also discovered that a large number of Arab countries host small numbers of international students, and this may be due to some security and economic conditions. The results also indicated that international students in higher education institutions face psychological, social, and economic challenges and problems with adaptation and self-confidence.
