Popular Proverbs as a Repository of Cultural Identity
(Toward an Interpretive Model of Najdi–Gulf Zubairi Identity)

This study aims to reinterpret the cultural identity of Al-Zubair through the analysis of popular proverbs as one of the most significant repositories of cultural memory and mechanisms for the reproduction of collective identity. It is based on the premise that popular proverbs extend beyond preserving social experience or conveying traditional wisdom; rather, they function as cultural institutions that reinforce value systems, regulate social relations, shape work ethics, and construct the relationship between people and place, thereby contributing to the continuity of cultural identity across generations.
The study employs an Inductive Interpretive Content Analysis approach to examine a comprehensive corpus of 771 popular proverbs documented in the principal source on Al-Zubair's folk heritage. Rather than classifying proverbs according to conventional thematic categories, the study reconstructs the underlying cultural systems embedded within them through an integrated theoretical framework informed by cultural identity theory, cultural memory, cultural geography, social capital, and interpretive anthropology.
The analysis identifies five interrelated cultural systems that collectively shape Al-Zubairi identity: the value system, the social system, the economic system, the urban-spatial system, and the identity system. These systems are not treated as independent categories but as interconnected cultural structures that interact dynamically to reproduce the identity of the community. The findings further reveal that Al-Zubairi identity emerged through the historical interaction of Najdi cultural heritage, the Gulf socio-cultural sphere, and the commercial urban environment of Al-Zubair, all of which have been preserved and transmitted through popular proverbs as a form of collective cultural memory.
The study proposes an interpretive model of Al-Zubairi identity, arguing that popular proverbs should be understood not merely as reflections of cultural identity but as active mechanisms through which identity is continuously produced and sustained.
