Experiences of developed Countries in Economically benefiting from International Students and how to apply these Lessons in Saudi Arabia

Abstract

The current study explores the economic impact of international students in higher education institutions in developed countries and ways to benefit from the experiences of those successful countries in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study relied on the descriptive approach, and the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Australia, and Russia were selected, as they are among the most prominent countries hosting international students in their colleges and universities. The study concluded that the economies of the six targeted countries have benefited from the presence of international students. The results showed that international students contributed to the growth of the US GDP by more than 40 billion US dollars, in Britain by more than 41 billion pounds sterling, in Canada by more than 37 billion Canadian dollars, and in Australia by approximately 29 billion Australian dollars for the year 2022. As for France and Russia, the economic contribution of international students could have been much higher. The study presented proposals to enhance mechanisms for attracting international students to higher education institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, drawing inspiration from the successful experiences of the six countries targeted by the study.
